i’ve only ever wanted all these earthly things
earth could never give to me:
to hold her probabilities
and melt down my mistakes
made under a sun which could never give to me
a scorching shred of certainty
i was searching where permanence could never be.

the molten metal which you melted
to pour your promises into me
fills every gap of confidence
the sun instilled in me.
bolstered by the boldness of my new bones,
we clamor in our new weight
to readjust to home.

i climb inside, clumsily,
the way we ascended the trees
in our youth with far less to lose,
and collapse on the floor of your fortress.
metal will never be a match for your oaken arms
like the sun won’t come close to keeping me warm.
